Model Petra Němcová Helps Fellow Victims of Natural Disasters

Victims of tragedy recuperate in different ways. Some will never forget the fear; others will choose to forget the past as if it never happened. Petra Němcová chose to make a change. The Dutch supermodel, a survivor of the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake, founded the Happy Hearts Fund to restore hope and provide children opportunities after a natural disaster.

It was a perfect holiday for Němcová and her photographer-fiancé Simon Atlee until the tsunami hit the resort they were staying at in Thailand. She survived, with serious internal injuries and a broken pelvis. Atlee drowned and was found a year later in the shores of Sumatra. Losing Atlee that fateful day encouraged Němcova to help victims also at loss.

Happy Hearts Fund is active in nine countries, where over 34,000 children benefited from their programs. Němcová also led the rebuilding of schools and started sponsorship programs to give children life after disaster.

Scarred yet committed, Němcová continues to rebuild lives of children all over the world.
